Get your story straight.
There’s no one way to write a book.
Why not choose the way that’s best for you?
The Writer’s Quandary
Writing a book is a long and lonely process.
Writing a book has to be the longest, single-most solitary creative act. It’s rarely collaborative, and mostly undertaken in a vacuum. Most writers are avid readers and have a sense of storytelling from the books they love, but the craft of writing — the how of it — is usually a process of trial and error. How do I write a book? How do I find the time? Is it worth the time and effort? Is it even possible? A blank screen, a deep breath, and go. Figuring it out as you write.
There are, of course, some amazingly helpful resources on writing: books, webinars, podcasts, workshops. And they are invaluable for the writer who seeks to learn and understand. But at the end of the day, it still comes down to a blank screen, a deep breath, and go. A solitary act that can take months, even years. And then the big question of What do I now do with the book I’ve written?

Meet Amy Moore-Benson:
story seeker, natural collaborator, publishing veteran
I discovered my love of publishing at 17, when I landed a job at a magazine in Paris. Working as a copy
editor and translator, it was a front-row seat to how words transform into stories. It was magic, and I
was hooked. After graduating from McGill University, I worked for Harlequin Enterprises, where I helped
launch and build the commercial fiction imprint, MIRA Books. Working on branding and marketing,
speaking with agents and sales reps, and acquiring books that launched careers and went on to become
bestsellers – it was publishing 101. After thirteen very successful years, I left MIRA Books to start my
own literary agency, AMB Literary Management, and in 2015, I moved my agency in-house
at MeridianArtists, where I continue to manage a stellar roster of writers of commercial fiction
and narrative non-fiction, working with authors and publishers in both Canada and the US,
and pitching their projects directly for TV/film development.
With thirty years’ worth of experience buying, selling and supporting books, for me, the
magic always comes back to the words – and the stories they create. And that’s why I’ve created The
Story Lab: a place where writers with a story to tell can do their best work, supported every step of the way.
